Effigy Mounds National Monument Backway Ridge Route
Ancient burial mounds and river bluff overlooks
The ridge roads above the Mississippi give you views that Native Americans knew 2,000 years ago when they built the effigy mounds — bear, bird, and geometric shapes still visible from the high ground. This backway route follows old logging roads and hunting trails through the hardwood forests above McGregor, connecting several unmarked mound groups that most visitors never see. You’ll navigate tight clearances through mature oak and maple, cross Turkey Creek at several points, and climb to overlooks where you can spot mounds shaped like thunderbirds and bears in the clearings below.
Easy to moderate depending on seasonal conditions — mostly well-maintained gravel and dirt forest roads with a few technical spots where erosion has cut deep ruts. Stock high-clearance vehicle sufficient during dry conditions, 4WD helpful in spring and after heavy rains. Best during fall when leaves are down and mounds are most visible. National Monument requires entry fee but no special permits for the backways. You’ll gain perspective on Iowa’s ancient history and some of the finest hardwood forest driving in the upper Midwest.
