Muleshoe Bend Recreation Area Sand Pit Technical Challenge
Sand pit mayhem where the Colorado River bends
The old lignite power plant at Muleshoe Bend left behind more than cooling towers and transmission lines — it created a maze of sand pits, limestone ledges, and technical terrain where the Colorado River makes its dramatic bend through Central Texas. This challenging circuit navigates the former industrial site’s access roads and utility corridors, now managed as a recreation area where anglers chase bass and 4×4 enthusiasts test their skills on loose sand transitions and stepped limestone formations. The notorious Sand Pit Drop requires careful line choice and momentum management as vehicles descend 12 feet through loose material to reach the river bottom.
Expert-level difficulty demands modified 4WD with aggressive tires, skid plates, and recovery gear — stock vehicles will struggle with the sand transitions and sharp limestone edges. Open year-round but best in dry conditions; summer heat reflects brutally off the white limestone. Day-use only with no overnight camping permitted. Expect to air down for sand sections and air back up for rock. You’ll earn serious technical driving experience, unique geology, and the bragging rights that come from conquering one of Central Texas’ most challenging recreational 4×4 areas.
