Brazos River Sand Hills OHV Trail System
East Texas sand that swallows the unprepared
The Brazos River Sand Hills stretch for 23 miles through some of the most challenging sand terrain in Texas, where massive dunes shift with every flood and ancient river channels create deep, soft-sand bowls that swallow vehicles whole. This forgotten corner of East Texas sees seasonal flooding that constantly reshapes the landscape, creating new obstacles and washing away old routes. The infamous ‘Quicksand Flats’ section near the old Brazos bridge has trapped more rigs than any other spot in the state, requiring serious sand skills and recovery gear to navigate safely.
Difficult rating demands serious sand preparation—aired-down tires, momentum, and a willingness to dig. Stock vehicles can handle the outer loops, but the deep interior requires paddle tires or serious modification. Best accessed during dry months from September to February when water levels drop. No services within 30 miles, and cell service is nonexistent in the bottoms. This is pure Texas sand wheeling at its most challenging, where the landscape changes with every storm and only the prepared survive.
