Angelina National Forest Boykin Springs Recreation Area Timber Circuit

East Texas timber roads through pristine creek country

Moderate

Forest Road 303 branches off Highway 63 near Zavalla, diving into the heart of Angelina National Forest’s 153,000 acres of longleaf pine and hardwood bottoms. This network of gravel and dirt logging roads connects Boykin Springs Recreation Area with remote creek crossings along Neches River tributaries, passing abandoned CCC camp foundations and old timber company rail grades. Forest Road 315 offers the technical highlight, dropping steep through sandy creek bottoms where Striker Creek cuts through red clay banks lined with massive beech and magnolia trees.

Moderate difficulty requires high-clearance vehicles during dry conditions, but spring rains turn clay sections into impassable gumbo. Summer brings oppressive East Texas humidity and aggressive insects, making fall and winter the preferred seasons. The Angelina allows dispersed camping along forest roads, though established sites at Boykin Springs offer water and facilities. Cell service exists sporadically, and nearest fuel is in Zavalla. The payoff includes some of Texas’s most pristine creek ecosystems and access to excellent bass fishing in remote oxbow lakes.
