George Washington National Forest Forest Road 59 Mill Creek Circuit

Technical limestone canyon with Civil War ruins

Difficult

Forest Road 59 drops into one of Virginia’s most dramatic limestone canyons, where Mill Creek has carved deep slots through Ordovician bedrock over millennia. The route begins near Switzer Dam and immediately plunges through a series of technical rock gardens before reaching the ruins of Catherine Furnace, where Confederate forces smelted iron ore during the Civil War. The most challenging section involves negotiating house-sized limestone boulders that have calved off the canyon walls, creating a natural obstacle course that tests both driver skill and vehicle articulation.

This is serious technical terrain requiring experienced drivers and well-built rigs with rock sliders, skid plates, and aggressive tires. Late fall through early spring offers the best conditions when water levels are low enough to safely navigate the creek crossings. Summer flash floods can turn the normally placid creek into a raging torrent within minutes. No camping is allowed in the gorge itself, but dispersed sites exist on the surrounding ridges. The payoff is exploring one of Virginia’s most geologically spectacular and historically significant backcountry areas.
