George Washington National Forest Forest Road 42 Ramsey’s Draft
Old-growth approach to pristine wilderness boundary
Forest Road 42 dead-ends at the Ramsey’s Draft Wilderness boundary after 4.2 miles of increasingly technical terrain through some of Virginia’s last old-growth forest. The route starts benign near Staunton Dam, but erosion from decades of logging traffic has carved deep ruts and exposed bedrock that’ll test your suspension. Ancient hemlocks tower overhead as the road narrows, ending at a primitive parking area where the Ramsey’s Draft trail continues on foot into designated wilderness — no vehicles beyond this point, period.
Moderate difficulty with a few technical rocky sections that demand careful tire placement. High-clearance 4WD recommended, especially after storms when fallen trees block the route. The Forest Service gates this road December through March for wildlife protection — call the Staunton Ranger District before heading out. No camping along the road itself, but nearby Braley Pond offers established sites. Spring brings spectacular wildflowers, while fall offers solitude when most tourists have headed home. Carry a saw — storm damage frequently blocks the final mile.
