Hatfield-McCoy Trail System – Rockhouse Branch
Technical coal country through feud territory
Deep in the heart of coal country, Rockhouse Branch cuts through the rugged hills where the Hatfield and McCoy families once waged their legendary feud. This section of West Virginia’s premier trail system threads between active mining operations and reclaimed strip mines, climbing through technical rock gardens and steep coal-seam grades that test both driver skill and vehicle capability. The notorious Devil’s Backbone ridge section features off-camber traverses with serious consequences for mistakes.
This is difficult territory requiring experienced drivers and capable 4WD vehicles with skid plates and recovery gear. The rocky terrain punishes stock suspension, and several sections demand low-range crawling through boulder fields. Spring brings muddy conditions that can strand unprepared vehicles for days. Summer offers the most reliable access, though afternoon thunderstorms turn dry washes into torrents. Trail permits required through the Hatfield-McCoy system. You’ll experience genuine Appalachian backcountry with history soaked into every hollow and ridge.
