Spruce Knob Forest Road Circuit

High-altitude Appalachian technical loop

Difficult

The Spruce Knob Circuit winds through West Virginia’s highest peaks, starting from the Seneca Rocks area and climbing through dense forest to Spruce Knob’s 4,863-foot summit. This route combines Forest Roads 112, 1, and 104 into a challenging loop that tests both driver skill and vehicle capability. The technical highlight comes at Big Run Overlook, where loose shale and exposed bedrock demand careful line selection while offering stunning views across the Potomac River valley.

This is serious mountain terrain requiring high-clearance 4WD and experienced drivers. Sharp rocks can puncture tires, and weather changes fast at elevation. Best tackled May through October when snow isn’t blocking the upper roads. No permits needed, but carry extra water and food—cell service is nonexistent above 3,000 feet. The payoff is classic Appalachian overlanding through some of the most remote country in the Mid-Atlantic, with dispersed camping opportunities throughout the circuit.
