Spruce Knob Backcountry Loop

Summit loop around West Virginia's highest peak

Moderate

From the shadow of 4,863-foot Spruce Knob, this backcountry loop traces old logging grades and mining roads through some of the most isolated country in West Virginia. The route passes crumbling foundations of long-abandoned settlements like Whitmer and skirts the edge of pristine wilderness areas where brook trout still run wild in crystal headwater streams. Forest Road 112 climbs through dense red spruce forests that were clearcut a century ago, now regenerated into cathedral-like stands.

Difficulty stays in the moderate range, but remote sections require self-sufficiency and good navigation skills — GPS can be spotty under the thick canopy. Any high-clearance vehicle handles the maintained forest roads, though 4WD helps in muddy conditions during spring snowmelt. Summer and early fall provide the most reliable access, with spectacular foliage in October. Dispersed camping is allowed throughout the national forest, and several established sites offer fire rings. You’ll experience true Appalachian solitude just hours from major East Coast cities.
