Forestry Trunk Road — Hwy 734 Iosegun Lake to Berland River Headwaters
Northern boreal foothills, mud, moose, and no signal.
This northern segment of Hwy 734 between Iosegun Lake and the Berland River headwaters is deep Alberta bush at its most uncompromising. The road passes through active logging tenures and Crown land, crossing numerous unnamed tributaries and following cutline roads that intersect the main track every few kilometres — navigation is straightforward if you’re paying attention, but distractions will get you lost in a hurry. The Berland River drainage is prime moose, bear, and wolf habitat, and in the right season you’re almost guaranteed to see large game. Watch for loaded logging trucks Monday to Friday; they don’t yield and neither should you be trying to pass them on this road width.
This is a legitimate remote-travel route — recovery gear, a sat communicator, and a full spare kit are non-negotiable. Two-vehicle minimum is strongly recommended. The road is passable in a stock 4×4 in dry conditions but turns into a greasy, tire-sucking mess after any significant rain. Fuel up in Whitecourt or Valleyview before departure; neither end of this segment has services. No cell service for the entirety of this run. Best season is July through September when ground is firm and water crossings are manageable. Dispersed camping is available throughout on Crown land — find a high flat spot away from the river banks.
