Speculator-Piseco-Oxbow Lake Loop
Southern Adirondack lumber camp loop
This 28-mile loop cuts through the heart of the southern Adirondacks, following old logging roads that connected turn-of-the-century lumber camps around Piseco and Oxbow Lakes. The route splits off Route 8 near Speculator, winding through dense mixed forest on maintained dirt roads that see minimal traffic outside hunting season. Key waypoint is the historic Oxbow Lake dam site, where massive white pine stumps still mark the old log drives down the Sacandaga River.
Moderate difficulty with occasional muddy sections and stream crossings that can get sketchy in spring runoff. Stock high-clearance vehicle handles it fine in dry conditions, but 4WD recommended during wet periods or late fall. Best tackled May through October when seasonal road restrictions lift. No permits needed, but check Hamilton County for road closures. Dispersed camping allowed throughout state forest sections. This route delivers classic Adirondack backcountry without the crowds of the High Peaks region.
