Five Rivers Environmental Education Center Backcountry Loop

Most folks never realize Five Rivers has a backcountry road system threading through 450 acres of managed habitat south of Albany. The old farm roads and timber access tracks connect through hardwood forest, wetlands, and grassland restoration areas, with the highlight being the ford crossing at Vloman Kill near the old beaver dam complex. The route passes the abandoned Normanskill railroad grade and several forgotten foundation ruins from 19th-century farms that once covered these hills.

Easy to moderate difficulty with seasonal mud being the main challenge — avoid during spring thaw and after heavy rains. Any vehicle with decent ground clearance can handle it, though 4WD helps in the wetter sections around the kill crossings. Open year-round but best in fall when foliage peaks and ground firms up. No overnight camping allowed, but it’s a solid half-day exploration that showcases New York’s reclaimed agricultural landscape. Educational value is high for families learning habitat restoration.
