D.A.R. State Forest Blue Trail

Berkshire hills technical challenge on forgotten roads

Moderate

The D.A.R. State Forest Blue Trail cuts through some of the most challenging terrain in the Massachusetts Berkshires, following abandoned carriage roads and logging tracks that date back to the 1800s. The trail system winds through dense hardwood forest and over rocky ridgelines, with the toughest section being the ascent to the fire tower on Mount Grace — a technical climb that’ll test your low-range gearing and tire grip on loose shale. The old CCC-built stone bridges and culverts still channel seasonal runoff across the path, creating muddy washouts that can swallow a stock SUV.

This is legitimate technical 4WD territory requiring high clearance, skid plates, and recovery gear. Spring conditions turn sections into axle-deep mud pits, making summer through fall the smart play for most rigs. No permits needed, and dispersed camping is allowed throughout the forest with proper fire precautions. You’ll earn spectacular ridge-top views of the Connecticut River Valley and a genuine workout for your drivetrain navigating these forgotten Massachusetts backroads.
