Sabine National Forest Indian Creek Recreation Area Circuit
Pine forest logging roads with creek crossings
You’ll find yourself threading through towering longleaf pines on old logging roads that haven’t seen regular traffic since the timber boom ended. This 28-mile circuit winds through the Sabine National Forest’s eastern boundary, crossing Indian Creek at least four times via concrete low-water crossings that can get sketchy during spring rains. The real test comes at mile 16, where Forest Road 115 drops into Palo Gaucho Bayou—a crossing that’s claimed more than a few stock pickups when the water’s running high.
Moderate difficulty requires high-clearance 4WD and good judgment about water levels. Best run during dry season (September-February) when creek crossings are manageable and the sugar sand sections aren’t soup. No permits needed, but fuel up in Hemphill—it’s 40 miles to the next gas station. You’ll earn solitude few people find this close to I-10, plus some of the best dispersed camping spots in East Texas. Have a dirty day.
