East Texas Pineywoods Sabine National Forest Logging Road Network

Lost logging roads through East Texas timber maze

Moderate

The Sabine National Forest holds hundreds of miles of forgotten logging roads that once moved East Texas pine to mills across the region during the timber boom of the early 1900s. These grass-grown tracks wind through second-growth forest between Hemphill and Milam, crossing Palo Gaucho Creek and its tributaries on concrete low-water crossings built by the CCC. The main challenge is navigation through an unmarked maze where GPS struggles under the canopy and every intersection looks the same — locals still call some of these routes by the logging company names from 80 years ago.

Moderate difficulty primarily due to navigation challenges and seasonal water crossings that can go from ankle-deep to impassable in hours during East Texas thunderstorms. Stock high-clearance vehicles work fine in dry conditions, but 4WD becomes essential during wet seasons when the clay base turns to axle-deep gumbo. Spring offers wildflowers and flowing creeks, while fall hunting season means sharing the woods with hunters. No permits required, and dispersed camping is allowed throughout the forest. You’ll earn solitude in some of Texas’s last wild timber country and a feel for what the Big Thicket was like before the mills cleared most of East Texas.
