Toledo Bend Sabine River Timber Circuit

Timber roads to Louisiana's biggest lake.

Difficult

The Toledo Bend Timber Circuit follows active and abandoned logging roads through the dense pine forests surrounding Louisiana’s largest lake. These routes were carved by International Paper and other timber giants to haul logs from clear-cuts to mills, creating a spider web of sandy two-tracks that wind through longleaf and loblolly pine stands. The circuit includes the notorious Mud Hole Creek crossing and climbs to scenic overlooks of the 186,000-acre reservoir created by damming the Sabine River in 1969.

Difficult terrain demanding experienced drivers and proper 4WD with low range. Sand, mud, and water crossings can trap unprepared vehicles, especially after rain when red clay turns to gumbo. Winch and recovery gear essential. Best tackled in dry months from November through February. No permits needed but respect active logging operations and private timber land postings. This is working forest country where you’ll experience Louisiana’s timber industry firsthand while earning views of one of the South’s premier bass fishing destinations.
