Scottish Highland Rally Circuit
Rally legends born on Highland single tracks
The Scottish Highland Rally Circuit strings together the legendary stage roads that made the RAC Rally a proving ground for the world’s toughest drivers. Starting from Kincraig and winding through the Cairngorms via Tomintoul and Dufftown, these narrow single-track roads with passing places demand precision driving through some of Scotland’s most unforgiving terrain. The route includes the notorious Eastwoodhill stage near Huntly, where co-driver calls echo through dense Scots pine forests and visibility drops to meters in Highland mist.
This is moderate to difficult driving requiring good ground clearance and experienced handling of narrow roads with steep drop-offs. A stock Land Rover or similar 4WD handles it fine, but you’ll need recovery gear and know how to read Scottish weather. Best tackled May through September when snow won’t trap you on the high passes. No permits needed, but fuel up in Aviemore—services are sparse once you’re deep in the Highlands. You’ll earn legitimate bragging rights and some of Europe’s most dramatic mountain scenery.
