Rothiemurchus Forest to Loch an Eilein — Cairngorms Estate Track via Inverdruie

Ancient pines, a loch, and a castle island.

Moderate

Rothiemurchus is one of the last great Caledonian pine forests left standing in Scotland, and the estate track running south from Inverdruie toward Loch an Eilein puts you right in the heart of it. Starting just outside Aviemore, the gravel estate road winds through Scots pine and juniper scrub with the Cairngorm plateau brooding on the skyline. The loch itself — with its 13th-century castle ruin sitting on a small island — is the payoff, but the track continues past Loch Gamhna and up toward the Larig Ghru approach if you want more miles under your wheels. Watch for soft verges after heavy rain and deer crossing without warning at dusk.

This is an easy-to-moderate run suitable for standard 4WDs and high-clearance vehicles — you don’t need lockers, but ground clearance matters after wet weather when ruts fill with peaty water. The estate is privately managed by Rothiemurchus Estate; access for vehicles requires prior permission and is not freely open to the public in the way hill tracks sometimes are. Best run April through October. Aviemore is your fuel and food stop. No camping on the estate track itself, but Coylumbridge campsite is a short drive away. What you get is cathedral pinewoods, real Highland quiet, and a castle on a loch — hard to beat.
