Cairngorm Club Bridge to Derry Lodge — Upper Dee and Lui Water Remote Track via Glen Lui

Arctic valley landrover road into Mar Estate.

Moderate

Park at the Linn of Dee car park west of Braemar and point your nose down the White Bridge track along the River Dee. The glen opens slow and flat before the Lui Water crossing at Derry Lodge — a Victorian stalkers’ bothy and estate hub sitting beneath the Black Luibeg — comes into view. This is Mar Lodge Estate managed by the National Trust for Scotland, and the track is genuine estate landrover ground: two deep ruts through peat bog, river gravel, and granite scatter. The Lui Water ford is the crux — knee-deep in spate conditions and deceptive with a soft gravel bottom. Wrong line here and you’re sideways in a cold Scottish river with nobody coming for you.

Difficulty is moderate but the remoteness is serious — Braemar is the last fuel stop and cell service vanishes at the car park. You’ll need a genuine high-clearance 4WD with a decent set of mud-terrain tyres; recovery gear is not optional. The NTS controls access from late July through mid-October for the deer stalking season — phone Mar Lodge Estate before you go. Best window is May to June or post-stalking in November when the ground is firm. What you get is one of the finest mountain valley drives in Scotland with red deer on the track and the Cairngorm high tops pressing in on all sides.
