Wilmore Wilderness Park Southern Access Road — Kvass Flats to Sheep Creek
Alberta wilderness. The real kind.
Wilmore Wilderness Park is Alberta’s largest provincial wilderness park and most people will never see it. The southern access road off the Smoky River corridor near Grande Cache pushes northeast through spruce lowlands and river flats before hitting the Kvass Flats staging area — a broad gravel bench above the Smoky River that’s served as a backcountry base since the outfitting era. From Kvass Flats the track continues toward Sheep Creek, passing through active horse outfitter territory and cutting across several unnamed tributaries that drain the park’s southern ridges. In fall, the elk rut here is borderline insane — you’ll hear bulls bugling before you even get your camp set up.
This is a remote, expert-leaning run best left to rigs with solid recovery gear and a navigation setup that doesn’t rely on cell signal. The road is unmaintained beyond the staging area and seasonal wet conditions can close sections entirely. No fuel between Grande Cache and your turnaround point — carry extra. A satellite communicator is non-negotiable. Best window is late July through mid-September. No permits required for vehicle travel to the wilderness boundary, but Wilmore itself is non-motorized beyond that point. The payoff is genuine Alberta wilderness with almost zero other vehicle traffic.
