Forestry Trunk Road — Hwy 734 Kvass Flats to Sulphur Gates Provincial Recreation Area

Limestone canyon country on the Smoky River.

Moderate

The stretch of Hwy 734 between Kvass Flats and Sulphur Gates Provincial Recreation Area is one of the most underrated runs in the Grande Cache region. You’re tracking the Smoky River through dense spruce and pine, the road cutting across muddy seismic cutlines and creek crossings before arriving at Sulphur Gates — where the Smoky River squeezes between 100-metre limestone walls in one of Alberta’s most jaw-dropping natural canyons. Kvass Flats itself sits at the confluence of mountain and boreal and is a known staging area for hunters and horse packers heading into Willmore Wilderness. The road is largely maintained gravel but deteriorates with wet weather, particularly at the low-water crossings near the Sulphur River tributary.

A high-clearance 4×4 is the minimum sensible choice here — after rain, the approach roads turn greasy and the creek crossings get muddy-bottomed fast. No permit is required. Fuel up in Grande Cache before leaving; there’s nothing out here. Cell service dies around the Kvass Flats turnoff and doesn’t return until you’re back near town. Best run June through September, though early spring will have you fighting deep mud and lingering snowpack. Sulphur Gates has a basic provincial recreation area with camping — pit toilets, fire rings, and river access. Worth every rough kilometre.
