Cairnwell to Glenshee Ski Road — Spittal of Glenshee to Glen Isla via Monega Pass
Scotland's highest drove road, no guardrails.
The Monega Pass has been moving cattle, soldiers, and whisky smugglers across the eastern Cairngorm fringe for centuries. Starting from the A93 near the Spittal of Glenshee, the track climbs steadily northeast past Creag Bhalgairean and across open heather moorland to the Monega Hill summit plateau at roughly 940m. On a clear day you’re looking down into Glen Isla on one side and back toward the Cairnwell ski development on the other — two completely different worlds separated by about eight kilometres of bog and stone. The Monega Burn crossing mid-route is the crux; after rain it can be axle-deep and slippery-banked, with no real line other than straight through.
This is a moderate-to-difficult hill track. High clearance is mandatory; a proper 4WD with diff lock will thank you on the descent into Glen Isla where the eroded track turns to loose slate and peat ruts. Run it late May through September — the gate at the Isla end is often locked outside deer management seasons so confirm access via the estate beforehand. No fuel between Blairgowrie and Braemar. Cell service disappears completely on the plateau. Camping is possible on the flat ground above the burn crossing. Have a dirty day.
