Cairngorm Mountain Road — Coire Cas to Cairn Gorm Summit via Ski Road
Scotland's highest drive into arctic plateau country.
The Cairngorm Mountain Road is one of the most accessible yet genuinely dramatic high-altitude drives in Scotland. Starting from the Coire Cas car park off the B970 near Aviemore, the single-track road climbs relentlessly toward the Cairngorm ski area base at around 620m, with the surrounding plateau pushing well above 1,200m. The road is managed by Cairngorm Mountain Ltd and cuts through open subarctic moorland where red deer graze year-round and snow can fall in any month. At the top you’re standing on the edge of one of Britain’s most serious mountain environments — the northern corries drop sharply, and the Lairig Ghru pass cuts south through the massif below you.
This is not a technical 4×4 route — a capable high-clearance vehicle handles it fine in summer — but winter conditions turn it genuinely serious, with the road closable at any time by Cairngorm Mountain rangers. Best driven May through October; winter requires chains or winter tyres and constant weather awareness. No permit needed, but the top car park charges a fee. Aviemore is your fuel and supply hub, 10 miles north. Cell service is spotty to none above the tree line. What you get is unfiltered Scottish Highland exposure and views that stretch to Ben Nevis on a clear day.
