Manistee National Forest Forest Road 8 North Country Trail
Classic Michigan timber country two-track
Forest Road 8 cuts a 14-mile swath through the heart of Manistee National Forest, following old logging roads that date back to Michigan’s timber boom. The route parallels sections of the North Country Trail, threading between regenerating clear-cuts and mature hardwood stands. You’ll ford Little Manistee River twice and navigate around washouts from spring runoff that keep this trail interesting for stock 4WD rigs.
Moderate difficulty with a few technical spots where erosion has carved deep ruts. Any high-clearance 4WD can handle it, though low-range helps on the steeper climbs out of creek bottoms. Best run May through October when water levels drop. Multiple dispersed camping spots along the route, but bring your own water. This is Michigan forest service at its core—working timberland that shows you how the state actually manages its public ground.
