Driftless Area Limestone Quarry Historic Circuit
Abandoned quarries above the mighty Mississippi
This 15-mile circuit links three defunct limestone quarries in Iowa’s Driftless Area, where glaciers never flattened the ancient river valleys. The route follows old quarry haul roads up steep limestone bluffs, passing the massive Dubuque Stone Company operation that supplied building stone for Chicago after the 1871 fire. Key waypoint is the Bellevue quarry overlook at mile 8, where you can peer 300 feet down into the flooded pit while gazing across the Mississippi to Illinois bluffs.
Difficult rating due to steep limestone ledges and loose rock on the quarry access roads — definitely not for stock vehicles. High-clearance 4WD with rock sliders essential, low-range gearing recommended for the steepest sections. Spring can bring washouts from snowmelt. No camping in the quarries themselves, but nearby Bellevue State Park offers river camping. Spectacular fall colors when the hardwood canopy explodes across the bluff country.

Frequently asked questions
Can a stock 4Runner handle the limestone quarry technical sections?
No, you need a modified 4WD with skid plates and rock sliders minimum. The sharp limestone shelves and loose rock faces will destroy stock undercarriage protection.
Is the trail accessible during winter months?
No, stick to May through October. Winter snow and ice make the already technical limestone surfaces extremely dangerous, and many quarry access roads are seasonally closed.
Do I need permits to access the abandoned quarries?
It's mixed private and public land, so some sections require landowner permission. Check with Bellevue city office and respect all posted signs - trespassing fines are steep in Iowa.
What's the hardest obstacle on this circuit?
The steep limestone ledges at the main quarry face near mile 8 - it's a 35-degree climb over loose rock with exposure. Winch points are limited due to the quarried terrain.
Can I count on cell service for emergency communication?
Cell service is spotty throughout the bluffs, especially in the deeper quarry cuts. Bring a satellite communicator and travel with another vehicle for safety.
