Niobrara Valley Preserve Ranch Roads
Prairie roads through Nebraska's last wild country
The Niobrara Valley Preserve’s ranch road network follows century-old cattle trails across some of Nebraska’s most pristine mixed-grass prairie. These maintained dirt roads wind through 60,000 acres of Nature Conservancy land, passing ancient bison wallows and crossing the spring-fed creeks that feed the Niobrara River. The main ranch road leads to Bone Creek, where you can spot elk in the early morning mist and wild turkeys strutting through native bluestem.
Easy driving suitable for any high-clearance vehicle, though spring mud can challenge even 4WD rigs. Best accessed May through October when gates are open to the public. No camping on preserve land, but nearby Smith Falls State Park offers sites. This isn’t technical wheeling—it’s a chance to see what Nebraska looked like before the plow, with some of the state’s best wildlife viewing and a legitimate chance to spot the preserve’s small bison herd.
