McKenzie Pass-Santiam Pass Loop
Volcanic moonscape loop through the high Cascades
This 82-mile high-country loop connects Highway 126 and Highway 20 via McKenzie Pass and Santiam Pass, cutting through some of Oregon’s most dramatic volcanic terrain. The western approach climbs through old-growth forest before breaking into the McKenzie Pass lava flows — a moonscape of black basalt stretching toward the Three Sisters. Dee Wright Observatory sits atop the pass at 5,324 feet, its stone tower offering 360-degree views of volcanic peaks. The route continues past Clear Lake’s spring-fed waters and crosses Santiam Pass before descending through different ecosystems back to Sisters.
Easy to moderate depending on weather, with good paved surfaces throughout but steep grades and tight curves demanding attention. Any vehicle can handle it during the open season from July through October — snow closes McKenzie Pass for eight months each year. No permits needed for the highway, but wilderness permits required for backcountry camping. Limited dispersed camping options along the route due to wilderness boundaries and rocky terrain. The geological diversity makes this essential for anyone wanting to understand the Cascades’ violent volcanic history, plus you’ll have access to dozens of wilderness trailheads for deeper exploration.
