Alvord Desert Playa Loop
Oregon's Bonneville beneath towering Steens Mountain
The Alvord Desert stretches like a moonscape beneath the towering eastern face of Steens Mountain, offering Oregon’s most otherworldly driving experience across 12 miles of cracked alkali hardpan. When dry, this ancient lakebed becomes a natural speedway where you can push your rig across the flat expanse, watching dust devils dance in your mirrors while the 9,700-foot Steens summit looms impossibly close. The playa connects to several rough tracks leading to Alvord Hot Springs and the ghost town of Borax Lake, where century-old mining operations left their mark on this high desert wilderness.
Easy driving when conditions are right, but this route demands serious weather awareness — the playa becomes an impassable mud trap after any moisture. Stock vehicles handle the hardpan fine, but bring recovery gear and extra water since cell service is nonexistent and the nearest fuel is 50 miles away in Fields. Best tackled May through October when the playa is bone-dry. You’ll earn bragging rights for conquering Oregon’s most remote desert and some of the most dramatic mountain-meets-desert scenery in the American West.
