Sossusvlei Desert Circuit — Sesriem to Deadvlei and Hidden Vlei via the Namib Dune Sea

900-year-old dead trees in the world's oldest desert.

Moderate

The last 5 km to Sossusvlei are what earn the 4×4 requirement — deep soft sand that swallows 2WDs like they’re nothing. Once you’re past Sesriem Gate and into the NamibRand dunefield, the scale hits you hard: Big Daddy Dune climbs roughly 325 metres above the clay pan, and the dead camelthorn trees of Deadvlei have been standing there bleached and skeletal for somewhere between 600 and 900 years. Hidden Vlei, a shorter walk from the 2×4 parking area, gets fewer visitors and rewards those who push further. First light and last light are the only times to photograph this place — midday turns it into a blinding white furnace.

NWR (Namibia Wildlife Resorts) manages access and collects entry fees at Sesriem Gate. The park opens at sunrise and the gate closes at sunset — show up late and you’re locked out overnight. A 4×4 or AWD vehicle is mandatory past the 2WD parking area for the final sand approach; deflate to around 1.4 bar for the soft sections. No fuel inside the park — fill at Solitaire (60 km north) or Sesriem camp. Best visited April through October when temperatures are survivable; summer hits 45°C+ in the dune field. Camping at Sesriem Camp is the classic base — book well ahead during peak season as NWR accommodation fills months out.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock Hilux or Land Cruiser handle the sand to Deadvlei, or do I need to air down?

Air down to around 18–20 PSI before leaving the 2WD car park — the final 5km to Deadvlei is deep Namib sand and will swallow a fully inflated tyre. A stock 4WD with low range is sufficient; lifted rigs with aggressive tread have an easier time but aren't required.

When is the trail closed or impassable?

November through March is summer in the Namib — brutal heat (50°C+ in the vleis), occasional flash floods that close the access road, and restricted gate hours make it genuinely dangerous. Stick to April through October; mornings are the only sane time to be on the clay pans anyway.

What permits do I need and what does entry cost?

You need a valid Namib-Naukluft Park entry permit, paid at Sesriem Gate — fees are charged per person and per vehicle in NAD. NWR manages the gate and accommodation; book accommodation inside the park through nwr.com.na if you want to be first at Deadvlei at sunrise, which requires staying inside the park boundary.

What's the hardest section and what makes it technical?

The 5km sand track between the 2WD car park and Deadvlei is where rigs get stuck — it's rutted, soft, and has no room to build momentum in several spots. Keep moving, stay in existing tracks, and don't stop on the face of a dune; recovery in 50°C heat with no cell service is a bad day.

Is there any fuel or water available inside the park, and how far is the nearest real fuel stop?

There is no fuel inside the park — Sesriem has a small lodge operation but no reliable fuel; Solitaire, about 80km northeast, has a petrol pump that keeps irregular hours. Carry a minimum 20-litre jerry can and all your own drinking water; the nearest town with guaranteed fuel and resupply is Maltahöhe or Walvis Bay.
