Shawnee State Forest Forest Road 7 Turkey Creek Explorer
Iron furnace ruins in Ohio's Little Smokies
Forest Road 7 winds through the heart of Shawnee State Forest, Ohio’s largest at 63,000 acres of unbroken woodland stretching to the Kentucky border. The route passes the stone ruins of Turkey Creek Iron Furnace, where charcoal-fired bloomeries operated from the 1820s through the Civil War era. The climb to Lookout Point offers sweeping views across the Ohio River valley, with Kentucky’s rolling hills visible on clear days from this 1,000-foot vantage point.
This easy to moderate route handles well with any high-clearance vehicle on maintained gravel roads, though muddy sections develop during Ohio’s wet spring months. The forest allows dispersed camping with proper fire precautions, making this ideal for weekend basecamp exploration. Best visited April through November when seasonal roads stay open. Pack water and fuel in Portsmouth before heading out—Turkey Creek township has been gone for over a century. You’ll find excellent bird watching and some of Ohio’s best fall colors in mid-October.
