Pepacton Reservoir Perimeter Road
Scenic loop around Catskills reservoir history.
The Pepacton Reservoir Perimeter Road winds 18 miles around the eastern Catskills’ crown jewel, following the shoreline of this 1950s-era flood control project that drowned entire communities to supply New York City’s water. The well-maintained gravel surface passes abandoned stone foundations and cemetery markers poking above the waterline, creating an eerie reminder of the valley’s submerged past. Bridge crossings over East Branch Delaware tributaries and the dramatic Downsville Dam overlook provide natural stopping points.
Easy to moderate difficulty depending on recent weather — spring snowmelt can create muddy sections and minor washouts. Any high-clearance vehicle handles this route comfortably, though the occasional pothole keeps you honest. Open year-round but best enjoyed May through October for comfortable camping weather. No permits required, and dispersed camping is allowed along most stretches away from the water supply. Excellent trout fishing access points and peaceful valley camping make this a solid weekend basecamp for exploring the broader Catskill backcountry.
