Pike State Forest Ridge Road
Ohio's largest forest block wilderness escape.
Pike State Forest sprawls across 11,000 acres of reclaimed strip mine country in south-central Ohio, creating the state’s largest forest block outside the Wayne National Forest. The main Ridge Road cuts a 15-mile path through restored prairie grasslands and second-growth oak forests, following the spine of ancient ridgelines that once held coal seams. Wildlife is abundant here — wild turkey, whitetail deer, and even black bear sightings along the remote timber roads that branch off the main route.
Any stock SUV can handle the well-maintained gravel roads, though high clearance helps during wet seasons when the clay base gets slick. The forest opens year-round for day use, with primitive camping allowed in designated areas during hunting seasons. No permits required, but check hunting schedules before visiting. Cell service is nonexistent in the interior valleys, making this a true escape from digital noise. The payoff is peaceful solitude and some of the best wildlife photography opportunities in Ohio.
