Scioto Brush Creek Sand Prairie Explorer Circuit

Ohio's secret sand dune ecosystem

Moderate

Hidden in southern Ohio’s Scioto County lies one of the state’s most unusual ecosystems — remnant sand prairies left by retreating glacial outwash. This 12-mile route winds through Scioto Brush Creek Preserve and adjacent state lands, where loose sand and sparse vegetation create terrain more reminiscent of Nebraska than Ohio. The highlight is Sunshine Ridge, a wind-carved sand dune system that supports rare prickly pear cactus and prairie grasses while challenging traction and ground clearance on the approach climbs.

Moderate difficulty requiring good momentum management in the sand sections and careful line choice through the creek crossings. Any high-clearance 4WD will handle it, but aired-down tires help immensely in the deeper sand pockets. No permits required but check with ODNR since prescribed burns happen regularly. Best visited late spring through early fall when wildflowers bloom across the prairie remnants. Pack plenty of water — this is harsh, exposed country with limited shade. The reward is experiencing an ecosystem that shouldn’t exist in Ohio, plus excellent stargazing from the sandy hilltops.
