Passo dello Spluga North — Splügen to Thusis via the Swiss Alpine High Road

Napoleon's cliff road through the Swiss Alps.

Moderate

The Splügen Pass (Passo dello Spluga) summit sits at 2,117 metres on the Swiss-Italian border in Graubünden, and the northern Swiss descent from Splügen village to Thusis through the Via Mala gorge is the part most drivers remember hardest. The road narrows to single-lane width on switchbacks carved directly into the cliff face, drops through the spectacular Via Mala — a limestone gorge so tight and deep it was once considered the end of the traversable world — and crosses the Hinterrhein river multiple times on stone bridges that predate the automobile. The pass itself has been a trade route since Roman times; the modern road follows Napoleon’s 1822 military route almost exactly. In summer you share it with motorcyclists and the occasional camper van whose driver has clearly underestimated the geometry involved. The views into the Rheinwald valley from the Swiss side switchbacks are genuinely jaw-dropping.

For a modern 4WD it’s a Moderate drive in dry conditions — the surface is paved but narrow, exposed, and unforgiving of inattention. Wide vehicles (over 2.2 metres) will struggle on the tightest bends above Splügen. The pass is closed from roughly November through May depending on snowfall — check the Graubünden road status before committing. No permit required. Fuel in Thusis or Splügen. This is a day run — plan it as part of a larger Alpine traverse between Switzerland and Italy’s Lake Como region. The Via Mala gorge section alone is worth it.

Frequently asked questions

Can a full-size truck or wide-body overland rig handle this route?

Width is the real limiter here — anything over 2.2 metres wide is going to have a bad time on the tight upper sections near the pass. Stock midsize trucks, Land Cruiser 70-series, Defenders, and similar rigs fit fine; lifted long-wheelbase builds with wide flares should measure before committing.

When does the Spluga Pass road actually open each year?

Typically late May to early June depending on snowpack, and it closes again around late October or first heavy snowfall. Check current status with the Graubünden Tiefbauamt before heading up — it can close mid-season too after storms.

Do I need a vignette or any special permit to drive this road?

Switzerland requires a highway vignette (annual sticker, around CHF 40) for motorways, but this mountain road itself doesn't require a separate pass permit. The vignette is mandatory if you transit any Swiss motorway getting there, so buy one at the border.

What's the hardest section and what should I actually expect?

The exposed switchbacks climbing out of Splügen toward the 2,117-metre summit are the crux — narrow, no guardrails on the drop side, and oncoming traffic requires one vehicle to reverse to a passing spot. It's not technically difficult, but the exposure and tight width demand full attention and confidence in your rig's width.

Is there anywhere to camp along this route, or is it strictly a drive-through?

Dispersed camping is generally not permitted in Swiss Alpine zones — this isn't a camp-wherever situation like US public land. Your best options are established campgrounds in Splügen at the south end or around Thusis at the north; book ahead in summer as they fill fast.
