Llano River Granite Slabs Backcountry Circuit
Pink granite playground in the Texas Hill Country
Pink granite domes rise from the Llano River valley like sleeping giants, carved smooth by 1.2 billion years of weathering and worn to perfection by generations of Texas Hill Country cattle. This backcountry circuit weaves through private ranch roads and county maintenance tracks, threading between massive granite outcroppings where the Llano River cuts through some of the oldest exposed rock in North America. You’ll cross the river at Sandy Creek Ford — barely 18 inches deep in normal flow but impassable after storms — before climbing onto the granite mesa where buzzards circle overhead and the only sound is wind through live oak.
Moderate difficulty demands high-clearance 4WD for the granite shelves and creek crossings, but stock rigs handle it fine with careful spotting. Spring through fall offers the best conditions, though summer heat can be brutal on the exposed granite. No permits required, but all land is private — respect gates and stay on established tracks. Dispersed camping is available along the river where landowners allow it. You’ll earn spectacular night skies, ancient geology lessons, and the satisfaction of navigating one of Texas’ most beautiful and geologically significant backcountry routes.
