Lost Maples State Natural Area Campground — Sabinal River Canyon
Lost Maples sits about 45 miles northwest of Uvalde in the deeply cut Sabinal River canyon — genuine Texas Hill Country terrain, not the flat scrub most people picture. The park runs around 30 primitive and developed sites split between the canyon floor and upland areas. Expect limestone ledge walking, cedar and maple canopy, and the river running clear over rock shelves in good years. Fall color draws serious crowds — October and November reservations evaporate fast. Summer is quieter but hot. Fire rings are standard; burn bans track Edwards County conditions, so check ahead.
Access from Uvalde is paved all the way via US-90 west to Vanderpool via FM 187 — no clearance issues. From the eastern TAT leg near Rocksprings, plan roughly 40 miles of mixed paved and caliche road south. Cell service is weak in the canyon. Reservations through Texas Parks & Wildlife are essentially mandatory on fall weekends. Water is available on-site.
