Bandera County Lost Maples Canyon Trail
Limestone canyon technical through cypress groves
This gnarly limestone trail drops into the headwaters of the Sabinal River where massive cypress trees guard spring-fed pools that never go dry. The route follows old ranch roads through typical Hill Country scrub before plunging into a hidden canyon system where the rock shelves create natural steps and the creek runs clear over white limestone. Watch for the cave entrance about halfway through — local ranchers used it for cold storage back in the day.
Difficult rating due to sharp limestone ledges that’ll slice sidewalls if you’re not careful, plus several water crossings that require precise wheel placement. Aggressive tread tires and rock rails recommended, along with a spotter for the technical sections. Best run in late fall when the maples turn color and creek levels are manageable. No permits but this crosses private ranch land — stick to established routes and pack out everything. Worth it for some of the most remote canyon country in south Texas.
