Garner State Park Campground — Frio River Hill Country Basecamp
Garner State Park sits on the Frio River about 30 miles north of Uvalde — dead in the corridor for anyone running the Trans-America Trail through the Nueces River country. The campsites range from full-hookup RV pads to walk-in tent spots tucked under cypress and live oak along the riverbank. It’s a real campground with flush toilets, hot showers, and a small camp store. Busy as hell on summer weekends — families, tubers, and jukebox dancers have claimed this river for decades. Book ahead or show up on a weekday.
Access is straightforward via US-83 North from Uvalde to FM 1050. Paved all the way in. Reservations through Texas State Parks are strongly recommended from March through Labor Day. Cell signal is spotty inside the canyon. Water is drinkable at the park. Fire restrictions vary by drought conditions — check TPWD before you roll in.
Cold Frio River. Cypress shade. Book early.
