Lake Buchanan Llano Uplift Trail

Pink granite domes rise like sleeping giants across the Llano Uplift, where billion-year-old rock formations create technical challenges between Lake Buchanan and the Colorado River. This 35-mile circuit threads through active and abandoned granite quarries, past pink feldspar outcroppings that glow at sunset, with Sandy Creek providing the main technical obstacle — a rocky ford that’s claimed bumpers and oil pans when water runs high after Hill Country storms.

Moderate difficulty requires stock 4WD with decent ground clearance, though the granite slabs can tear up street tires fast. Spring and fall offer the best conditions, avoiding summer heat and winter flash floods. No permits needed on most sections, but respect private property boundaries around active quarries. Dispersed camping available along county roads and near the lake. This geological playground delivers both technical driving and some of the oldest exposed rock in North America.
