Limón Province Sixaola River Border to Gandoca Beach Track
Caribbean coast wilderness track to Panama border
This remote coastal route follows the Caribbean shoreline from the Panama border at Sixaola River south to Gandoca Beach, threading through Gandoca-Manzanillo National Wildlife Refuge. The track alternates between sandy beach driving at low tide and inland rainforest passages that cross multiple tidal creeks. The notorious Río Sixaola crossing requires careful timing with tidal conditions, while the approach to Punta Mona involves technical navigation through coconut palm plantations and mangrove channels that flood during high tide.
Difficult route requiring extensive preparation and local knowledge of tidal schedules. 4WD with diff locks essential, plus sand recovery gear, tide tables, and emergency communication. Best attempted during dry season (February-April) at low tide cycles. No permits but refuge entry fees apply. Fuel and supplies must be carried from Puerto Viejo as no services exist along route. Camping possible at designated beach zones. Offers pristine Caribbean coast access and world-class wildlife viewing in one of Costa Rica’s least developed coastal areas.
