Costa Rica

Limón Province Cahuita to Manzanillo Caribbean Reef Road

Caribbean culture and coral reef access

Easy

This coastal route follows the Caribbean shoreline from Cahuita National Park through a chain of Afro-Caribbean fishing villages toward the Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge. The track weaves between coconut groves and coral reef lagoons, crossing four tidal creeks where timing matters more than ground clearance. Local Rastafarian communities like Puerto Viejo and Punta Uva offer glimpses into Costa Rica’s Caribbean culture, while side tracks lead to some of Central America’s best coral reef snorkeling at Cahuita and Manzanillo points.

Easy to moderate difficulty with the main challenge being tidal creek crossings — check tide charts and cross at low tide to avoid deeper water. High-clearance helpful but not essential; more about timing and route selection. Any season works, but April-September offers calmer Caribbean seas for snorkeling. Basic supplies available in Puerto Viejo, but fuel up before starting. Beachside camping possible at several points, though some areas require permission from local communities. You’ll experience Costa Rica’s Caribbean soul while accessing reef systems that rival anything in the region.
