Laurel Fork Special Management Area Circuit

High-altitude bog crawling in Virginia's wetlands

Difficult

The Laurel Fork Circuit drops you into Virginia’s version of the Rockies – a high-elevation bog surrounded by spruce forests at 4,000 feet. This technical loop follows old logging roads and game trails through the Laurel Fork Special Management Area, crossing the main stem of Laurel Fork multiple times as it meanders through beaver ponds and mountain meadows. The route passes remnants of the old Laurel Fork Railroad grade, used to haul timber from these remote highlands in the early 1900s.

This is a difficult route demanding experienced drivers and modified 4x4s with good ground clearance and recovery gear. Multiple water crossings can be knee-deep, and the bog sections will test your diff locks. Only attempt in dry conditions from July through September – winter closes the access roads. No permits needed but respect the fragile ecosystem. Primitive camping is allowed but pack out everything. The payoff is fishing pristine native trout waters and experiencing one of Virginia’s most unique ecosystems.
