Klondike Loop Mining Circuit
Gold Rush mining roads through Arctic wilderness
This route connects Dawson City to Mayo via the Silver Trail and back roads that service active and abandoned gold mining operations. You’ll pass massive dredge tailings, operational placer mines, and ghost camps from the Klondike Gold Rush era. The circuit includes the notorious Dempster Highway connection, Duncan Creek Road through active mining claims, and the return via Stewart River crossings where million-dollar operations still pull gold from permafrost.
Weather is everything — attempt only June through September when river crossings are manageable and mining roads aren’t locked in permafrost. You’ll need a reliable 4WD, spare parts, extra fuel for 500+ kilometers, and cold-weather camping gear since nights drop below freezing even in summer. The Mayo Lake access requires technical driving through mining claim territory. This isn’t just scenic touring — you’re threading between active industrial operations in one of the world’s most productive goldfields.
