Jarbridge Canyon Road

Nevada's deepest canyon mining descent

Difficult

Jarbridge Canyon Road drops 2,000 feet through Nevada’s deepest canyon, following a precipitous mining road that clings to canyon walls above the churning Jarbridge River. The route starts high in the Jarbridge Mountains and switchbacks down through aspen groves and granite outcrops, with sections where the shelf road narrows to barely one vehicle width. About halfway down, you’ll pass the ruins of old stamp mills and mine buildings perched impossibly on the canyon walls, testament to the lengths miners went for gold.

This is difficult 4WD requiring experienced drivers, working brakes, and nerves of steel for the exposed shelf sections. High-clearance vehicles mandatory, with low range essential for controlling descents. Best attempted July through September when snow clears the high country. The ghost town of Jarbridge at the bottom offers primitive camping and a glimpse into Nevada’s roughest mining era. Fuel up in Elko—it’s a long way back to civilization if something goes sideways in this remote northeast Nevada wilderness.

Frequently asked questions

What clearance and armor do I need for Jarbridge Canyon Road?

You need high-clearance 4WD with low range and skid plates. The rocky descent is brutal on stock running boards and oil pans.

Can I run this trail in winter or spring?

No, snow closes the trail from October through June. Best access is July-September when the high country is clear.

Do I need permits for Jarbridge Canyon Road?

No permits required, but it's on Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest land so follow Leave No Trace principles. Dispersed camping allowed.

How technical is the descent into the canyon?

Very technical with loose rock, shelf roads, and steep grades. Take your time - this isn't a trail to rush.

How deep are the water crossings and should I bring recovery gear?

Water crossings are typically shallow but can change with snowmelt. Bring recovery gear - you're 15 miles from help with zero cell service.
