Kumbrabow State Forest Ridge Road Complex
Remote mountain wilderness with old-growth forests
Deep in the Monongahela Mountains, Kumbrabow State Forest feels like the end of the world — and that’s exactly the point. This 20-mile network of forestry roads climbs along Rich Mountain’s spine, passing through some of the last old-growth red spruce forests in West Virginia. The main ridge road connects via Mill Creek Road to reach the forest’s primitive camping areas, where 200-year-old trees dwarf everything else. The route’s highlight is the overlook at 4,050 feet, offering views across an unbroken sea of mountain ridges.
This is difficult terrain requiring experienced 4WD skills and proper gear. The rocky, rutted roads demand low-range gearing and skid plates, while creek crossings can be treacherous during spring runoff. Late summer through early fall provides the best conditions before winter gate closures. No permits required, but stock up on supplies in Webster Springs — it’s genuinely remote out here with zero cell service. The payoff is solitude few places in the East can match, plus some of the finest dispersed camping in Appalachia. Have a dirty day.
