Hurricane Rim Trail

Slickrock shelves above Zion's backyard

Moderate

The slickrock shelf drops away beneath your front bumper, and suddenly you’re staring straight down into Zion Canyon 3,000 feet below. This is Hurricane Rim Trail—23 miles of technical slickrock that puts you on the edge of Southern Utah’s most famous landscape, where one wrong line means a very expensive helicopter ride. The sandstone here doesn’t forgive hesitation, and the exposure will test your nerve as much as your driving skills.

Hurricane Rim demands a high-clearance 4WD with decent tires and an experienced driver who reads rock like scripture. The trail climbs 1,800 feet through a maze of slickrock domes, narrow ledges, and off-camber sections that’ll have your spotter earning their keep. The most notorious obstacle comes about halfway through—a steep slickrock face locals call “The Wall” where momentum is everything and backing down isn’t an option. Stock rigs with street tires will struggle on the polished sandstone, especially when it’s wet. April through October gives you the best window, though summer heat at 5,400 feet can turn your cab into an oven.

The Bureau of Land Management keeps this trail open year-round, but don’t expect cell service or marked campsites. Water is nonexistent on the rim, so pack everything you need for a full day. Dispersed camping is allowed, and the sunset views over Zion’s towers make the rough ride worthwhile. Fuel up in Hurricane before you start—this isn’t the place to run low on anything.

Hurricane Rim delivers what most Southern Utah trails promise but few actually provide: legitimate technical challenge with payoff views that justify the sphincter-clenching moments. You’ll earn every photo, and your rig will show the scratches to prove it. This isn’t a scenic cruise—it’s 23 miles of commitment that separates the posers from the drivers who actually know how to work a throttle on stone.
