Rota dos Bandeirantes Goiás Backroad
Colonial gold rush trail through cerrado wilderness
This 180km route traces the original Bandeirantes trail from Pirenópolis to Vila Boa de Goiás, following dirt roads and cattle tracks through the cerrado savanna. The path winds past colonial stone bridges, abandoned gold mines, and through the Serra dos Pireneus where 18th-century fortune hunters carved their names into rock faces. You’ll ford the Rio das Almas multiple times and climb through gallery forests that hide waterfalls and swimming holes.
The terrain is moderate, suitable for stock high-clearance vehicles during dry season. Wet season turns creek crossings into impassable torrents and clay roads into skating rinks. April through October offers the best conditions with clear skies and manageable water levels. No permits needed, but notify local authorities in small towns along the route. Fuel is available in Pirenópolis and Goiás, with basic supplies in Corumbá de Goiás. Wild camping is common, and the route offers a genuine taste of Brazil’s colonial mining history without the crowds.
