Estrada da Chapada dos Veadeiros Cristal Circuit
Crystal mining roads through mystical highlands
Deep in Brazil’s central highlands, the dirt roads threading through Chapada dos Veadeiros follow century-old crystal mining routes where garimpeiros once hauled wagonloads of quartz from hidden deposits scattered across this elevated cerrado wilderness. Starting from Alto Paraíso de Goiás, the network of interconnected fazenda roads and mining tracks covers 150 kilometers of rolling savanna punctuated by dramatic quartzite escarpments, with the main circuit passing through the ghost mining camp of São Jorge and continuing to the remote Morada do Sol crystal fields. The route includes challenging creek crossings, steep rocky climbs up mesa walls, and long stretches of deep sand that can trap unwary drivers during the dry season.
This moderate to difficult route requires high-clearance 4WD with good ground clearance, plus sand recovery gear for the deeper sections. Dry season from May through September offers the best conditions, though some creek crossings become impassable during heavy rains. Local miners still work claims along these roads, so respect private property and ask permission before exploring side tracks. The payoff includes accessing some of Brazil’s most pristine cerrado landscape, discovering natural crystal formations that made this region famous among rockhounds worldwide, and camping under southern hemisphere stars far from any light pollution.
