Jalapão Desert Circuit

Brazil's secret Sahara in the cerrado

Difficult

Jalapão State Park throws you into Brazil’s most surreal landscape — towering golden sand dunes rising from cerrado grasslands like something from Mars. The circuit connects the Fervedouro springs (crystal-clear pools where you can’t sink) to Cachoeira da Velha’s 100-meter waterfall via deep sand tracks that’ll test your driving skills. Most overlanders hit the Pedra Furada rock arch and camp under stars so bright you’ll forget cities exist, navigating by GPS between widely spaced landmarks in this 34,000-square-kilometer wilderness.

This is serious sand driving requiring deflated tires, recovery gear, and experience in loose surfaces — many rigs get stuck daily during dry season. Avoid March through May when rivers flood access routes. Stock up on fuel and water in Mateiros or Ponte Alta do Tocantins; there’s nothing between settlements for 200+ kilometers. The payoff is Brazil’s most pristine desert ecosystem, where giant anteaters wander between camp and you’ll share trails with maybe five other vehicles all week.
