Haines Road Boundary Country — Klukshu Village to Tatshenshini River Flats

Grizzly flats and Tlingit fish camps near the Alaska line.

Difficult

Klukshu Village sits about 70 kilometres south of Haines Junction on the Haines Road — a genuine First Nations fishing settlement where Champagne and Aishihik Nation members still harvest chinook and coho by traditional fish wheel every August. From here a rough track drops west and south toward the braided flats of the Tatshenshini River, threading through alder-choked creek bottoms and open gravel bars where the Kluane Ranges push hard against the Alaska border. The Klukshu River crossing is the crux — knee-deep in late summer, thigh-deep in June runoff, with a gravel bottom that shifts every year. The final kilometres open onto the Tatshenshini flats themselves, a vast, wind-hammered gravel plain that feels genuinely wild.

This is serious bear country — Tatshenshini-Alsek is one of the densest grizzly habitats in North America. Keep a clean camp, carry bear spray, and make noise at every creek. You need a capable 4WD with a snorkel or serious high-clearance to manage the Klukshu crossing safely; a winch line to solid timber is smart. No permit required on the Yukon side; the trail approaches but does not enter the protected area. Best season is July through mid-September. Fuel at Haines Junction; no services after that. This one rewards patience — the scenery is world-class.
